Our Gang-Our Gang Follies Of '38

Spanky McFarland, Alfalfa Switzer, Buckwheat Thomas

20 mins B&W 1937

Considered to be the best Our Gang comedy of all, this one begins in another tradition of the Follies of '36 and Reunion in Rhythm: in the basement theater of Spanky playing the lavish emcee of a kiddie revue. built primarily around the talents of Alfalfa, King of the Crooners. Alfalfa has decided to forego swing music for opera. To that end, he leaves and visits the Cosmopolitan Opera House, where he is asked to join a contract--effective twenty years later. Falling asleep, Alfalfa begins dreaming of his future, his name in neon lights all over Broadway. Then he loses his gift, the night of his operatic debut, resulting in singing in the streets. Our hero is rescued when he ventures into Club Spanky, where Darla and Buckwheat are making millions. Alfie breaks down and finallyh accepts to return to crooning. Alas, the dream isn't over yet. The imagination of a child has been vividly conveyed in this wonderful piece. In addition, the film scores both as an uproarious comedy and an entertaining musical.
